About the Native American Hopi Tribe

The Hopi tribe primarily live on the Hopi reservation in the Southwestern United States. When this tribe encountered the Spanish in the 16th century, they were referred to as Pueblo due to the fact that they live in villages (Pueblo in Spanish means village). This tribe descended from the Ancient Pueblo people who constructed large apartment-house complexes in northwestern New Mexico, northeastern Arizona, and southwestern Colorado.

• One of the four original Hopi village, the Oraibi, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited villages in the United States.
• The Hopi tribe were originally against conversion to Catholicism
• Most of the Hopi tribesmen converted to Catholicism after an incident where Father Porras reportedly restored the eyesight of a blind man
• In 1540s, the village population was at 1,500-3,000 residents
